1. The part of Lucifer's preacher was entirely eliminated in the 1990
revision, and with it the satire of Christian orthodoxy. Instead, Lucifer
tells Adam simply that there will be many willing to preach to him the
philosophies of men mingled with scripture. Adam retorts that he is
waiting for messengers from his Father. Elohim is then heard commanding
Jehovah to send messengers down to Adam.
Through the 19th century and into the beginning of the 20th, the satire
of Christian orthodoxy was played up for comic relief. Lucifer might
produce preachers representing various denominations, all of which would
become targets of ridicule.
